Project description

MECD is a world-class integrated Engineering campus which creates an environment for the next generation of engineers to innovate.

The development incorporates a cluster of new and existing buildings: the eight-storey 860,000 sq ft Engineering Building A; Engineering Building B and the James Chadwick Building on Upper Brook Street; the refurbished Grade II listed Oddfellows Hall, and the York Street Building.

It features purpose-designed blended lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, student workshops and a range of spaces for outreach and social engagement initiatives. The development also includes highly specialist facilities including an Extra High Voltage Laboratory, an Anechoic Chamber and an Electro Magnetic Suite.

Positive influence

Our role included the management of the relocation of 8000 students and staff as well as over 3000 pieces of substantial equipment including electron microscopes, water jet cutters and x-ray diffractometers. We developed the equipment decant process from day one, incorporating degree of flexibility to allow the University to adapt to new technologies over time.

Buro Four were awarded the International Construction Project Management Alliance Award for our collaborative leadership of this project.

"Aspiring to achieve the high target performance criteria and bespoke quality requirements for the Electron Microscopy Suite and Extra High Voltage laboratory on site are key examples of the challenging tasks which have been expertly managed by the Buro Four team. Their attention to detail and impressive management of key stakeholders has been vital throughout."
