Following The Crown Estate’s plans to relocate to a new head office within their flagship development at 1 St James’s Market, they wanted to grasp the opportunity to provide a healthier and happier working environment for staff and visitors. The Crown Estate’s purpose, ‘brilliant places through conscious commercialism’, is at the heart of everything it does and The Crown Estate desired for its new workplace to demonstrate this purpose in practice.
With the health and wellbeing of their staff in mind, The Crown Estate aspired to achieve the WELL Building Standard Platinum Certification for its new home. This would be the first WELL Building Standard Platinum Certified office in Europe.
In order to achieve the WELL Building Standard Platinum Certification, the building and practices were measured against a performance-based system that incorporates seven factors; air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.

The Crown Estate viewed the move as a catalyst for change in their organisation with an aspiration to innovate in flexible working and optimise workplace strategy. Buro Four helped to deliver their objectives with the complex fit-out, to schedule. The whole project resulted in The Crown Estate’s new headquarters at 1 St James’s Market achieving the first WELL Building Standard Platinum Certification in Europe.
